I loved the first The Avengers movie a lot. It was a really fun watch, and it was the first Marvel movie to have all of their main characters in one movie, which was really cool to see. Not many movies ever had big crossovers with characters from different movies, and even though I was only 2 in 2012, I can guess that it was a really big deal that characters from all of these popular movies came together in this one.
I also really like how the heroes clashed and didn’t get along automatically. All of the movies these characters were introduced in had very different attitudes toward them, and none of these people really had the same background or values, which left a lot of room for them to disagree, which they did. I was excited to see how Tony Stark and Steve Rogers would get along, since they had such different morals, and we were shown just how different they are in this movie and future ones. They do eventually work together and do it well at that, being able to effectively save New York City from the Chitauri and capture Loki.
The continuity in this movie is also a really good addition. This movie combined the stories of 5 different high-grossing movies into one, and there had never been a series of movies to do that this successfully. It takes so many aspects from all of the different movies: Iron Man 1 & 2, The Incredible Hulk, Thor, and Captain America: The First Avenger, and creates a movie where they all have to try and find a way to work with each other against a common enemy.
A character I really like in this movie is Natasha Romanoff, or Black Widow. She was initially introduced in Iron Man 2, but her character was a lot more developed in this movie. She was shown doing a lot more than just spying on Stark, and I liked how much more we got to see of her skills. My favorite scene of hers in this movie is when she tricked Loki into telling her his plans for using the Hulk, and we got to see her deception in real time.
Bruce Banner also had changed actors for this movie, going from Edward Norton to Mark Ruffalo. I’ve never seen The Incredible Hulk, but I did like Norton’s acting from the clips that I have seen. Ruffalo does do a really good job depicting Banner, though, and I like the choice for the recast.
My favorite part of this movie has to be the script and feel of the movie. Even with the interdimensional threat and internal fighting with the Avengers, the whole movie was just really fun and lighthearted, especially when compared to a movie like Captain America: The First Avenger, which came right before it.
Overall, The Avengers (2012) is a really good movie, and a great introduction to The Avengers as a group. It did a great job of meshing all of these very different characters together, and added more depth and background to their characters. I recommend that anybody who likes anything about superheroes or Marvel watch this movie, and if you want to, all of the introductory movies and the reviews I wrote about them as well.
